Nonfiction

Like its fiction counterparts, nonfiction also lends itself to being flipped. Although much of ELA class time is focused on fiction, teachers have to help their students learn how to read nonfiction to prepare them for their chosen path beyond the classroom. Most of the information the students have to process in the world around them is nonfiction. Several state and national standards have placed a significant emphasis on the importance of including nonfiction text in the curriculum. To make literature more relevant, teachers need to bring in nonfiction that is relevant to what they are reading.

When April teaches any piece of fiction, she brings in several pieces of nonfiction to help students see the current relevance of reading the piece. For example, in her unit for “Master Harold” … and the Boys, by Athol Fugard, she researches modern issues in South Africa or any postcolonial country and then shares them with her class via a video or online article. For this work, the class uses primary source documents showing the laws that were in place in the 1960s in conjunction with a history documentary, as well as current issues, such as the death of Nelson Mandela. This helps her students understand the importance of reading this work even though they are more than 3,000 miles away. She focuses on the themes of the works—which should transcend time and place and show the relevance today of understanding them.
